Why worry about identity theft?

According to the FBI, identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. It cost the national economy over $50 billion dollars in 2005.

A major study, the Javelin Identity Fraud Report, has estimated that nearly 9 million Americans will fall victim to identity fraud this year alone. The losses could top $56 billion in 2006 with the typical victim being scammed for an average of over $6,300.

This does not include the countless hours spent trying to resolve all the issues related to such a crime, from fixing credit reports to contacting financial institutions.
